| Movie | A Beautiful Mind |
| Nutshell | A crotchety mathematician comes down with a nasty case of the crazies but he falls in love with a saint beforehand so it's all good. |
| Good Things | Very well done portrait of schizophrenia and great performances all around. Plus it's ginchy looking. |
| Bad Things | Old age makeup, drowning infants, shock treatments, Jennifer Connelly's distractingly good looks. I find her more palatable if she's all heroin'd out like in "Requiem for a Dream" and less so when she's "Career Opportunties"esque. The bookish, brainiac West Virginian main character is played by Russell Crowe who has biceps the size of my head. Blackhawk Down, Pearl Harbor, From Hell - Are there no American actors? There use to be quite a few. |
| Features | Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, my mom's boyfriend Russell Crowe, Christopher "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Paranoia?" Plummer, Paul "Chaucer" Bettany, Adam "I wanna dance!" Goldberg, Josh Lucas, Vivien Cardone, Anthony Rapp, Judd Hirsch, Cold War conspiracies, crytography, Life Magazine, jacks |
| Uncomfortable Moments | The wooing sort of made me nauseous but that's just me. The audiences absolute and vocal horror at Russell Crowe with some blood on him. (During Royal Tenebaums when a certain Wilson is all cut to shreds there's just sort of a slight sigh and okay that's just my ax to grind but that pissed me off.) I'd love to learn more about the making of this movie but I'm afraid if I watch the Behind the Scenes pieces that I'll be frightened by you-know-who's Eraserhead/Sid Vicious/Yahoo Serious haircut. |
| Notable | Remember those two smarty pants sidekicks in "Dazed and Confused" that hung out with Wooderson and Marissa Ribisi? Oddly enough, and it nagged at the back of my mind during the entire movie believe me, they are the smarty pants sidekicks in "A Beautiful Mind" that hang out with Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly. Not sure what that means but it can't be good. |
| Best Part | I guess the garbage man/thank-God-Russell's-going-to-be-all-right-after-all scene. |
| Best Line | "I respect beer!" |
| Crowns | 4 out of 5 |
